In more exciting news from the Esher Physics department, the College is delighted to announce that Esher won first place in the prestigious Key Stage 5 SATRO Problem Solving Challenge.

Satro Problem Solving Final Winners April 2026The team of comprised of six Physics A Level students who triumphed over strong competition, outperforming 96 other teams from 43 schools across five regional heats. Having already won their heat in February, they progressed to the final where only the top 24 teams competed.

The final event began with a live liquid nitrogen demonstration before students were set their engineering task: to design and build a working model crane capable of transporting materials around a simulated chemical plant. The challenge aimed to test practical problem-solving skills, teamwork, and application of real-world engineering principles.

Demonstrating exceptional creativity and collaboration, the students achieved the highest score of the competition, securing a clear victory.

The winning team — Matthew F, Sammi N, Artin J, Ben S, Karl H and Harry G — were praised for their innovation, enthusiasm, and outstanding teamwork throughout the event.

The SATRO Problem Solving Challenge is designed to inspire young people to pursue STEM subjects by engaging them in hands-on engineering scenarios.
