Dance Alumni Returns to Inspire Students
Dance Vocational students enjoyed a special contemporary dance workshop led by Esher alumna Derin Tastan (Class of 2023–25), who returned to share her experience of studying dance at degree level.
Currently studying at London Contemporary Dance School (The Place), Derin led students through a contemporary technique class inspired by the work of Merce Cunningham, giving them the opportunity to develop their skills and explore a different approach to movement.
As well as leading the practical session, Derin shared valuable advice about university auditions and the different pathways into higher education for aspiring dancers. Her advice? Research your options carefully. “Research your schools very well, as they have different values,” she explained, highlighting the importance of finding a school whose ethos and approach are the right fit for you.
She also encouraged students to remember that auditions are about more than technical ability.
“They are not looking for the best technique. They are looking at you – are you listening, engaging with the class, asking questions…?”
Thank you to Derin for taking the time to return to Esher and share her knowledge and experience with our Dance students. It was fantastic to welcome her back and give our aspiring dancers such valuable insight into the next steps in their dance journeys.
