Drama Students Explore New Styles
6.1 Drama & Theatre A Level students have begun work on their devised project, an important component of their course worth 30% of their final grade.
To launch the project, students took part in two professionally led workshops with two different theatre practitioners – Paper Birds and Gecko, exploring verbatim and physical theatre. These sessions gave students the opportunity to develop new skills and approaches to performance-making.
As part of the devised unit, students respond to a stimulus and create an original piece of theatre inspired by a specific practitioner. The early stages of the project centre on research, experimentation, and collaboration, before students refine their ideas for a final assessed performance, which will take place in November of their second year.
Jayne Taylor, Head of Drama & Theatre, commented on the work so far,
“It has been particularly encouraging to see students engaging with physical theatre, especially for those encountering the style for the first time. Through the workshops, students have developed key devising skills, strengthened their ability to work as an ensemble, and explored how to communicate meaning effectively to an audience. I’m looking forward to the creative work they produce.”
