Every student will choose at least ONE Extension Study option that best suits their interests and goals.

From scuba diving to acting, joining our jazz band or learning Russian, there is something for everyone – and if you can’t make up your mind, don’t worry – you can add another course to your timetable if you wish.

Choosing your Extension Study

During the summer enrolment process, you can put down up to six Extension Study options. Please make sure you are happy with all of your six choices as you are likely to be allocated one of them. If you wish to be considered for a sports team, you must put that team as your first option.

Please note, most courses are free, but where specialist materials and equipment are needed or registration required etc, a charge will be made to cover the costs incurred.

Long or short course?

You can either do one long course or two short courses in your first year. Some of our courses such as membership of a sports team or Duke of Edinburgh are considered ‘long courses’ and will last up until Easter.  If you choose a short course, these only last one term and you will need to choose another short course at changeover time in January, which you will follow until Easter.

1st Year: Sports Team Trials and College Production Auditions

If you are thinking of joining a Sports Team for your extension study, the trials will take place in the following days after enrolment 2026. Students interested in College Production must attend the Audition Workshop in the following days after enrolment at the end of August (in the drama studio).

2nd Year:  Specialised courses to support your progression after Esher

Students continuing with four A Levels, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, or a sports team do not need to add an Extension Study option, as these programmes continue into the 6.2 year.
