The Esher Sixth Form College ROSE Programme is about recognising, supporting and celebrating the sporting talents and successes of our students who compete at county, regional, national or international level.

In collaboration with St Mary’s University, Twickenham, the ROSE Programme combines both sporting excellence and academic support to help students develop as an athlete whilst managing their academic studies. The programme is a fantastic opportunity for students to gain a better insight into the life of a professional athlete.

What does the ROSE Programme involve?

As part of this programme, students have the opportunity to meet a range of sporting professionals and experts, including from St Mary’s University, and participate in a series of workshops. The following are examples of topics explored:

  • Physiology & Biomechanics
  • Strength, Conditioning & Nutrition
  • Sports Coaching Science & Sport Psychology
  • Physiotherapy & Sports Rehab

Students also have the opportunity to undergo physiological performance testing using a range of top-quality equipment at St Mary’s University as well as having the chance to meet some elite athletes on the performance pathway at St Mary’s University. These events aim to provide student athletes with an insight into what facilities and specialist coaching opportunities are available at higher education.

Dani Knight, Head of PE and Sport at Esher said,

“We have the ROSE programme in place to support high-performing athletes, or those who are on a pathway to, in accessing their sport while at college. Athletes will gain experiences in a range of sport science topic areas, how the content links to their current training and performance and an insight into what studying at university might be like while competing. As well as this, we hope to create a network for these talented individuals with others that might be managing the same commitments and challenges. We want to show how you can drive your standards in your sport while also driving those for study.”

Students will be asked to register their interest in the ROSE programme at the beginning of their first year at Esher.

I joined the ROSE programme to learn more about how best to maximise my sports performance. I’m really grateful to have been given the opportunity to join this course, and I’m especially looking forward to future sessions are biomechanics, as it’s an area I don’t know much about!  It’s also been really nice to connect with other students who are also juggling training, competing and college.
