Bar Mock trial Students outside Outside crown Court

Esher Sixth Form College’s 20-strong Bar Mock Trial team demonstrated exceptional skill and determination last weekend at the prestigious competition held at Southampton Crown Court. The team comprised of 6.1 students—some of whom are following the Law Pathway—took on the challenge of presenting cases before barristers in a real courtroom setting. They also participated in a Q&A session with a practicing barrister, who offered insights into career development and the realities of life at the Bar.

The event marked the culmination of months of rigorous preparation including students mastering case details.

Anna Young, Director of Progression Guidance at Esher, praised their efforts:
“Students worked incredibly hard on their roles as barristers and witnesses. The competition was at a very high standard and they performed brilliantly. We are very proud of the whole team.”

Esher’s team secured an impressive third place out of eight, a testament to their dedication and talent.

Student reflections captured the excitement and challenge of the experience.

Tristan R shared:
“I’ve been interested in law for a while, so taking part felt like a natural step. Stepping into a real courtroom was a completely different ballgame. My cross-examination was tricky, but by the closing speech, I’d dismantled the arguments against us. The rush afterwards felt like being on a rollercoaster. It was a brilliant challenge that boosted my confidence in public speaking and thinking on my feet.”

Zahara, who represented the prosecution, added:
“Standing before a judge and jury was incredible. I opened the trial, cross-examined witnesses, and even interrogated defendants! The day was inspiring and has motivated me more than ever to pursue a career as a barrister. The Q&A with barristers and judges deepened my understanding of the law.”

The Bar Mock Trial offers students a unique opportunity to experience the intensity and rewards of legal practice. With Law the most competitive course in the country, this kind of experience is invaluable for UCAS applications.

Well done to the entire team!  And congratulations to the winning team from Bhasvic College – an outstanding effort.
