Students were given a rare and unforgettable insight into the workings of the human brain during a special visit from esteemed neuroscientist Dr Guy Sutton, Director of Medical Biology Interactive and Honorary Consultant Assistant Professor at University of Nottingham Medical School.

Hosted as part of an immersive ‘Brain Day’, the event offered Psychology and Biology A Level students the chance to explore the brain’s structure and function in extraordinary depth.

The tutorial developed students’ knowledge across many fields including ways of studying the brain, neuroplasticity, neuropathology associated with traumatic brain injury, brain damage and criminal behaviour, and the nature of psychiatric disorders, with a specific focus on schizophrenia.

A highlight of the day was the live brain dissection, during which students were introduced to major anatomical structures including the corpus callosum and hippocampus. This powerful visual and practical experience enabled students to observe brain anatomy first-hand and connect theory with reality.

Katherine Wright, Head of Psychology, praised the event: “Brain Day was an outstanding experience for our Psychology A Level students. Dr Guy Sutton’s engaging delivery and expert insight made the complex content of the Biopsychology topic – such as localisation of function, brain plasticity, hemispheric lateralisation and the nervous system – accessible for students. It not only helped to consolidate their knowledge but has inspired them to explore neuroscience beyond the classroom.”

The College extends its sincere thanks to Dr Sutton for delivering such a compelling and inspiring session, and for truly bringing brain science to life.
