As part of Wider Skills Week, a large group of 6.1 Economics students travelled to New York, embarking on an action-packed itinerary of sightseeing, culture, and learning opportunities.

Braving sweltering 38-degree heat and 95% humidity, the students threw themselves into the experience, taking in the towering skyscrapers, the relentless buzz of traffic, and the energy of the crowds going about their everyday lives. Everyone embraced the city’s famous “I Love NY” spirit.

The trip offered several standout moments. A visit to the Federal Reserve captured students’ imaginations, sparking plenty of curiosity about the vaults of gold stored beneath Manhattan. At Yankee Stadium, the students enjoyed a private tour and an inspiring talk from the Director of Communications, who shared his career journey and advice on what makes a strong candidate in today’s workplace. And no visit to New York would be complete without sampling giant Brooklyn pizza pies, followed by the iconic walk across the Brooklyn Bridge.

Reflecting on the visit, Melissa Needham, Head of Economics said: “The trip was amazing. As teachers, we were able to build closer rapport with the students we teach and meet new ones within the department. Everyone worked so well together – it really was a fantastic experience.”
