College Celebrates Top Eco Schools Distinction Award
The College has achieved a major environmental milestone, earning Distinction—the highest accolade in the Eco Schools award programme.

The success is driven by the Student Environmental Committee, led by Oliver Fletcher, the Esher Student Union’s Eco & Sustainability Executive. The committee has championed initiatives promoting green careers and biodiversity, inspiring their peers to get involved in practical, hands-on projects.
Standout achievements include the flourishing allotments and the popular No Mow May initiative, both of which have exceeded expectations. These projects not only enhance the College environment but allow students to witness the tangible impact of their efforts, fostering a sense of accomplishment and connection to nature.
Eco Schools praised the College’s work, stating:
“Your application has truly impressed our team. You’ve changed behaviours, inspired others, and made a significant impact. Our only advice is to continue building on your wonderful achievements next year. Great work!”
Looking ahead, the committee has big plans for the coming year. These include the continued development of a sensory garden to provide calming, nature-rich spaces for students, as well as an ongoing programme of Green Skills and Green Careers talks to inspire the next generation of sustainability leaders. The ongoing delivery of the Carbon Literacy Certificate will further support staff and students in developing their understanding of environmental stewardship.
Teacher of Biology, Ed Jones, celebrated the committee’s achievements so far and shared his excitement for what’s next:
“We’re thrilled to share the wonderful progress made by the Student Eco Committee and are excited for another busy year ahead! We look forward to expanding the biodiversity areas around the College, making use of the new allotment shed, and building on the pollinator-friendly species introduced last year. I am particularly proud of the 17 students who successfully completed their Carbon Literacy award too!”
Students in 6.1 and 6.2 keen to get involved can email sustainability@esher.ac.uk or join the weekly Eco Club held on Mondays at lunchtime in room O203.
