French Students Preview Ozon’s L’Étranger
Our 6.2 French A Level students were among the first in the UK to experience François Ozon’s highly anticipated new adaptation of Albert Camus’ classic novel L’Étranger (The Outsider).
The screening took place at the elegant Ciné Lumière at the Institut Français in South Kensington. This is the first French film adaptation of the novel since its publication, and it was shot in striking black and white on location in Algeria. The cinematography vividly captures the atmosphere of pre-independence colonial Algeria while remaining faithful to Camus’ original text.
Following the film, students engaged in lively discussions—both on the night and back in the classroom—exploring the themes, cinematography, and cultural context of the story.
Catherine Wilks, Head of Modern Foreign Languages at Esher said,
“The trip provided a perfect fusion of literature, language, and cinema, giving students a fantastic opportunity to deepen their understanding of Camus’ work in an immersive setting.”
