Last week, 6.1 Fashion & Textiles A Level students stepped into the inspiring world of fashion with two trips designed to deepen their understanding of fashion history and garment design.

The first outing was to Chertsey Museum, where curator Grace Evans delivered a fashion history lecture alongside the Marriage à la Mode exhibition. Students had the opportunity to sketch directly from the displays, examining wedding dresses spanning from the 1780s to the 1980s and gaining insight into changing styles, craftsmanship, and social narratives across two centuries.

Later in the week, students travelled to London for a full day of study at two major exhibitions: Marie Antoinette at the Victoria and Albert Museum and Dress Codes at Kensington Palace. The visit provided further opportunities for observational drawing and first-hand engagement with historic garments, prompting enthusiastic discussion and creative inspiration throughout the day.

Nicola Walker, Head of Fashion & Textiles at Esher said,

“The trips offered students valuable real-world context for their studies, combining academic learning with direct access to some of the UK’s most significant fashion collections.”
