On Thursday 29th January the English Department was delighted to host a ‘Doors Open’ evening to celebrate the outstanding work done by Esher English/Art students in designing and creating murals on the English classroom doors which celebrate the work of a range of different writers, from Shakespeare to science fiction writer Philip K. Dick.

The students eloquently spoke to guests about the design process for their work and read some favourite extracts from their writers, before signing their door for posterity!

Sarah Barton, the 6.2 student who designed a door based around the work of James Bond creator Ian Fleming said: "The experience and process of designing and painting a door in the English department was different to anything I’d done before, but I leapt at the challenge; it was really interesting and enjoyable, and as I’m hoping to study Illustration at degree level, it was a perfect opportunity to gain some practice of working with both art and literature simultaneously.”

Adam Seddon, Head of English said: ‘We’re so proud of the work of all our artists – this project has made the whole department a much more inspiring place to study and work in. These doors will be a reminder for years to come of how creative and talented our students are, and of the amazing wider world of literature that’s waiting to be explored.”

Huge thanks to the artists: Anna Miller, Harriet Davie, Sarah Barton, Bethan Lapwood, Luke Bryant, Sandy Phukpho, Kexin Wang, Kate Broderick
