We are delighted to announce that the Esher College Debating team won the showcase debate which took place as part of the South Bank "Why?" festival. The festival was motivated by the United Nations Charter on the Rights of the child for young people doing inspirational things. The debate was to show off the rigorous level of debate that the Debating Matters competition has a record for displaying and encouraging. Two teams were chosen – Esher College and Hove Park School from Brighton on the motion "Artistic expression should never be censored". Lily Coombs-Berry and Maddie Constant successfully argued for the motion, discussing examples from art, literature and film to put the case for unfettered freedom of expression in the arts and winning over a tough panel of judges from the arts and academia.
