Over 40 students were involved in Esher College’s latest production: Toulouse and the Moulin, a reinterpretation of the tragic true story of Toulouse Lautrec set in Paris in the debauched 1890’s era. Toulouse’s life revolved around the cafés and clubs of Paris until he fell in love with a street girl who nearly destroyed him. An eclectic mix of musical numbers, performed by our talented band of first year students, included ‘Lady Marmelade’,  ’La vie en Rose’, ’One Day I’ll Fly Away’ and ‘Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend’. The singers immersed the audience in the seedy world of the Moulin Rouge. Backdrops of Paris and the iconic poster of the Moulin Rouge were painted by the theatre technician, Malcolm Hart, who also made many of the costumes. Second year students lead the production as assistant directors, choreographers and technical crew. Featured in this photograph are Oliver Smith as Henri Lautrec, an A level Drama and Theatre Student previously from Thamesmead School aspiring to become a film actor; Ellen Phillips as Jane Avril, an A level Drama and Theatre student previously from Teddington School aspiring to become a stage actor; Maia Phillips as La Goulue, previously from Hinchley Wood School and Fred Brown as Zidler, previously from St. Paul’s Catholic College (Sunbury-On-Thames). Both are Performing Arts BTEC students aspiring to become Musical Theatre performers.
