The PE & Sport Department works hard to make both the A Level PE and BTEC sport courses as practical in nature as possible. Students also have the opportunity to be involved in sports through the Sports Leaders Awards.
All BTEC sport students undertake the Community Sports Leaders Award (CSLA). This award also forms part of the second year extension study programme. The PE & Sport department also offer the Higher Sport Leaders Award (HSLA) to students who have passed the CSLA with distinction. The BTEC sport diploma and subsidiary diploma at Esher is 100% coursework based, which provides a stimulating and challenging vocational course for students wishing to progress to higher education or pursue a career in sport and recreation. The PE and Sport Department also offer students the opportunity to attain level 1 coaching qualifications in a range of sports.
Facilities
We have excellent sports facilities at our disposal throughout the academic year, which help to engage large numbers of students in sport. We have facilities for football, rugby, netball and a fantastic sports hall with a fitness suite, which is open to all students from 12pm – 2pm on a daily basis. The gym also has girls only sessions during the week. The gym is supervised by a qualified fitness instructor who can provide a personal training programme for students and staff alike. We have a dedicated Sports Development Officer employed on a part-time basis to increase participation and competition amongst the student population and beyond.
Focus
The focus of ‘Sport Esher’ is to increase the level of participation, provision and competition in sport across the college and engage our students in all areas of sport, leisure, outdoor and adventure activities, as well as volunteering, coaching and refereeing. In their second year students can take a Sports Leadership Award as part of their complementary studies, which offers an excellent opportunity for students wanting to pursue this field after Esher.
